  14. chosen the best image and multimedia management tool available

  20. INSTALLATION:
  21.  
  22. This documents all the changes that the Kudo installer makes 
  23. when installing Kudo:
  24.  
  25. *    Application files are copied to the target directory, 
  26.     typically c:\kudoread
  27.  
  28. *    The installer searches for the Microsoft OLE 2.0 DLLs 
  29.     on your machine. Three things can happen as a result 
  30.     of this search:
  31.  
  32.     1)     If they are found (as the result of someone 
  33.         having installed another OLE 2.0 compliant 
  34.         application), and they are of the same or 
  35.         a newer version as the copies that Kudo is 
  36.         shipped with, then nothing is done.  
  37.  
  38.     2)     If they are found but are of an older 
  39.         version than the copies Kudo is shipped with, 
  40.         then the Kudo installer will copy its newer 
  41.         versions over the existing ones, wherever it 
  42.         might find them on your machine.
  43.  
  44.     3)     If they are not found, Kudo places new 
  45.         copies of all the OLE 2.0 DLLs into your 
  46.         WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory.
  47.  
  48. The OLE 2.0 DLLs are functionally an extension to the 
  49. Windows 3.1 operating system, and so are effectively not a part 
  50. of Kudo at all.  
  51.  
  52. This means that, once installed, they are available for all 
  53. applications that support OLE 2.0, and need not be installed 
  54. more than once.  Other OLE 2.0 compliant applications will 
  55. generally observe this convention, and will not duplicate these 
  56. files in their installation if they are already present.  For 
  57. this reason, if you un-install Kudo, it may be risky to remove 
  58. these files unless you are certain there are not other 
  59. applications that rely on them.  
  60.  
  61. The OLE 2.0 DLLs are:
  62.  
  63.     ole2.dll
  64.     ole2conv.dll
  65.     ole2disp.dll
  66.     ole2nls.dll
  67.     ole2prox.dll
  68.     compobj.dll
  69.     storage.dll
  70.  
  71. *    An additional DLL, BWCC.DLL is installed following an 
  72.     identical procedure to the OLE DLLs.  This file fills a 
  73.     support function and is shipped with many applications.
  74.  
  75. *    The Kudo installer determines if it needs to modify 
  76.     AUTOEXEC.BAT.  You will be prompted before it modifies 
  77.     the file.  If you agree to modification, the line:
  78.     
  79.     SHARE.EXE /L:500 /F:5100
  80.  
  81.     will be added to AUTOEXEC.BAT.  If there is already a 
  82.     line present that loads SHARE, then that line will be 
  83.     modified to ensure that the /L and /F options are at 
  84.     least as large as the amount that Kudo requires.
  85.  
  86. *    The Ku-do installer then registers Kudo as an application 
  87.     with Windows, and takes care of registering OLE 2.0 on 
  88.     your machine.  Effectively, this modifies the 
  89.     registration database, REG.DAT, in your windows 
  90.     directory, and indirectly, your WIN.INI file.  It 
  91.     is accomplished by running REGEDIT.EXE with the 
  92.     files OLE2.REG and KUDO.REG, which are installed to 
  93.     your target Kudo directory.  This operation can be 
  94.     repeated manually if REG.DAT ever becomes corrupted, 
  95.     see tech note file "REGEDIT.TXT".
  96.  
  97. *    It is recommended to install the program in 256 
  98.     colors. In some computers, running in more than 256 
  99.     colors during installation may not create or display 
  100.     all the Kudo Browser categories.  
  101.  
  102. *    Please register the program by filling out the 
  103.     REGISTER.TXT information found on the CD. To do this, 
  104.     open the above file name using the Notepad application 
  105.     found in Program Manager. Fill in the appropriate 
  106.     information, then print the registration form.

  117. KNOWN INSTALLATION PROBLEMS:
  118. ****************************

  120. Two situations have been observed to cause problems with the 
  121. installer:
  122.  
  123. 1)    Installing to a PC that is configured as a diskless 
  124.     workstation can confuse the installer as to the 
  125.     whereabouts of your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.  In this 
  126.     situation, the installer generally cannot access 
  127.     your boot drive.  When the installer attempts to 
  128.     modify your autoexec file, it will probably come up 
  129.     with a path to an AUTOEXEC.BAT that doesn't exist, 
  130.     such as A:\AUTOEXEC.BAT. If this happens, you will 
  131.     need to make the modifications yourself. Select the 
  132.     option to NOT have the Kudo installer modify your 
  133.     autoexec file, and then, after the installation is 
  134.     complete, manually add the line:
  135.     
  136.     <path>\SHARE.EXE /L:500 /F:5100
  137.  
  138.     to your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.  <path> is the full path 
  139.     to your DOS directory (or wherever SHARE.EXE exists).  
  140.     The /L & /F options are suggested minimums. If you are 
  141.     already loading SHARE in your autoexec, then you only 
  142.     need to ensure that you add the command line options 
  143.     to the SHARE statement.  If the options are already 
  144.     there, and they are larger, then leave them alone. If 
  145.     they are there but are smaller, then use the values 
  146.     suggested here. You will need to reboot your computer 
  147.     for this change to take effect.
  148.  
  149. 2)    Installing to a network version of Windows can cause 
  150.     problems if the user does not have write privileges 
  151.     to some of the Windows directories. The Kudo installer 
  152.     may need to add some DLL's to your current 
  153.     WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory.  This directory will often 
  154.     be on a networked drive that is read-only when you are 
  155.     running a network version of Windows.  You will get 
  156.     messages to the effect of "Can't write to file ... due 
  157.     to read-only protection...", etc. This indicates that 
  158.     you will need to have the network supervisor run the
  159.     installation in supervisor mode to obtain proper 
  160.     write access to the necessary directories.

  163. VIEWING IMAGES IN THE KUDO BROWSER
  164. **********************************

  166. NOTE: The Kudo Browsers were created for the .BMP format only. 
  167. The images are also in the .WMF format and are identical to those 
  168. in the .BMP format. When viewing the Kudo Browser you will find 
  169. the following categories: Borders, Brochures, Corners, Forms 
  170. and Slides. These categories were placed in the browser for
  171. viewing the images. It is recommended, however, to use these 
  172. categories in the .WMF format instead for better resolution 
  173. and resizing capabilities. To go to the .WMF images click on 
  174. the Content folder next click on the .WMF subdirectory.
